The Young Spinner Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.
In those games, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Spin Options Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
